Wood Tradition

Franz Schuhmacher founded merkt as a joinery in 1937. 30 years later the next generation took over and merkt was expanded to become a manufacturing plant. merkt was among the pioneers of those who used numerically controlled wood-working machines. In the 70s mostly casings for barometers and grandfather clocks were made. These were built from solid wood and were ornamented using numerically controlled milling machines.

Beautiful Car components

In the 80s a new product segment was introduced. Vehicle interiors were refined with real wood panels and gear levers and before long reputable car manufactures such as Porsche, Daimler and BMW put these products into serial production. The substitution of solid wood handles by veneered blanks was an essential merkt-innovation at the time.

Designs for Everyone

merkt brought forward its extensive experience of wood surfaces into the 90s using it with other techniques for refining surfaces. Along side the wood product segment of the business merkt now uses, carbon fibre fabric processing, lacquering and DIP printing, which is used to apply any pattern to the work piece.

In the new millennium merkt founded a new joint venture in China, the Ningbo Merkt Automotive Decorative Parts Co. Ltd, with the Huaxiang group, a company already very successful in the automobile industry. The Head Office is located in the Ningbo district, 200 km south of Shanghai. With merkt's know-how, Ningbo Merkt has developed very well in the vehicle interiors sector and has acquired a good international reputation in only a short period of time.
